Cincinnati sits on a bend of the Ohio River, and this panoramic view takes in both the water and a bridge spanning it, a crossing that tied the Ohio city to the Kentucky shore opposite. In the 19th century Cincinnati was one of the busiest river ports in the interior of the country and earned the nickname "Queen City," so its steamboats, wharves and crowded riverfront made it a natural subject for artists and photographers. A wide view like this one also shows how the town's streets climbed the hills rising above the water.
