Dressed rabbits in a row of snowdrops set this card apart from the crowd of chicks and eggs that usually fill Easter postcards. Anthropomorphic animals in human clothing were a popular motif in illustrated cards of the late 1800s and early 1900s, when printers used color lithography to mass-produce holiday greetings for a growing middle-class market. Snowdrops, among the first flowers to bloom in late winter, carried a long association with hope and renewal, which made them a fitting companion to the spring holiday. Look closely at the small details of the costumes and the flowers, since these cards were often hand-colored or finished with gilt and embossing that rewards a careful eye.
