Rabbits in human clothing, framed in an oval border, are the detail that sets this card apart from the chicks, eggs and lilies that fill most Easter postcards. Cards of this kind were printed in large numbers in the early twentieth century, when lithographed postcards were a cheap way to send holiday greetings through the mail. Anthropomorphic animals in waistcoats and bonnets were a popular comic motif of the period, and the oval frame, often flanked by flowers or painted eggs, was a common layout for sentimental cards. Such cards were usually collected and kept in albums, which is why many have survived in good condition.
