Few Easter cards from the early 1900s are as playful as this one, which shows rabbits in a choir with an egg acting as conductor. Holiday postcards of this kind were mass-produced and mailed in large numbers, especially in the decades around 1900 to 1915, when the picture postcard was at the height of its popularity in the United States and Europe. Artists often relied on anthropomorphic animals and eggs to suggest spring, renewal and the Easter season, and the cheerful, musical theme made the card an easy choice for a holiday greeting. Look closely at the small details in the figures and lettering, which show how printers of the period combined color lithography with decorative borders to make affordable cards that felt special.
