Few World War I recruiting posters put the Marine Corps front and center the way this one does, with its direct call to "Be a sea soldier." Clarence F. Underwood, an illustrator known for magazine and advertising work, produced the color lithograph in 1917, the year the United States entered the war and the Marines began expanding rapidly. Like other military posters of the period, it tied enlistment to patriotism and the promise of adventure, and it is a useful example of how the Corps marketed itself to young men.
