The title pairs the widow's mite, the small coin the poor widow gives in the New Testament story, with the soldier's might, casting modest savings as support for men fighting overseas. The Liberty Loan Committee of the Second Federal Reserve District, based at 120 Broadway in New York, issued the poster, which is text only and relies on its wording rather than imagery to make the appeal. Liberty Loan drives ran across the United States during World War I, when the government borrowed heavily from ordinary citizens to pay for the war, and posters like this one urged workers, families and small savers to buy bonds.
