Little is recorded about the subject of this 1924 glass negative beyond its title, "Coach Ryan," which came from the National Photo Company and has not been independently verified, so the man's identity and the setting remain open. The National Photo Company was a commercial firm that photographed American cities and their residents in the early twentieth century, and this plate is part of that body of work. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947, and the streaks and blemishes visible on its surface come from natural deterioration of the original coating, a reminder of how fragile these plates are.
