Bayou St. John is one of the oldest waterways in New Orleans, a slow tidal channel that linked the early French settlement to Lake Pontchartrain long before the city's drainage canals and levees reshaped the area. This Detroit Publishing Company view, dated around 1903, shows the bayou at evening, with the fishing activity noted on its caption card suggesting that the water was then a working landscape as well as a scenic one. The company traveled widely photographing American towns and waterways for commercial postcards and guidebooks, so the picture reflects the turn-of-the-century interest in capturing quiet local scenes for a national audience.
