Its question, "Which? Soldier or Mechanic?", is the hook: the poster promises that a recruit could be both at once. Dated 1919, after the armistice had ended the fighting, it appealed to men who already knew how to run engines, lay track, or build bridges. During the war, Army engineer units did much of this work in France, building roads, railways, and port facilities behind the front. The poster presents that technical tradition as a career path rather than a wartime emergency, which makes it a useful example of how the Army pitched service to skilled workers in the early postwar years.
