Beersheba, the market town at the edge of the Negev, is the setting for this June 1930 photograph of Bedouin sheikhs invited to a locust celebration. Under British Mandate rule at the time, the town drew desert tribes who came to trade and to deal with officials, and locust swarms were a recurring threat to crops and pasture across the region. A gathering of tribal leaders built around such an occasion makes the picture worth a closer look as a record of how the authorities and the desert communities met.
