Moonlight does most of the work in this two-sheet drawing, which shows women pounding cloth at night. Fulling, the beating of woven cloth with mallets to soften and whiten it, was a household task that usually fell to women and was often done after dark, when the day's heat had passed. In Japanese and Chinese poetry, the sound of fulling mallets signified autumn and longing, so the scene carried more than everyday labor. The ink and watercolor work dates from roughly 1785 to 1849, late in the Edo period.
