Few details survive for this print beyond a date of about 1878 and a copyright deposit number, so the scene itself carries most of the story. In the late nineteenth century, shoeing was a routine necessity, since horses pulled wagons, carriages and streetcars over rough roads and wore through iron quickly, which made the farrier one of the busiest tradesmen in town. Prints of everyday work like this were often registered for copyright. An unverified note on the shelflist card links the work to a name, Dumont, but that attribution should be treated with caution.
