An offshore light structure of the U.S. Coast Guard stands out from the shore-bound towers that usually fill a lighthouse collection, since it was built to mark hazards well out at sea rather than a headland or harbor mouth. Structures like this were placed on shoals and reefs where a conventional tower could not be raised, so the keeper's work involved a platform, living quarters and a light set high above the water. Coast Guard management of these aids to navigation dates to the 20th century, when the service took over duties previously handled by the Lighthouse Service. Looking closely at the framework and its exposed setting shows the engineering problem of keeping a light steady in open water.
