This picture shows a Pennsylvania Railroad medallion with a laurel wreath, a decorative emblem set into the fabric of the railroad's Newark, New Jersey, station. The railroad used such roundels and keystone-style marks to identify its property and give its stations a sense of order and permanence. The laurel, an old classical symbol of honor and accomplishment, was a common choice for public buildings of the early twentieth century. Passengers passing through Newark would have seen the emblem as a small but deliberate sign of the company's identity.
