Banners carried through the crowd name the Federación Sindical Latino-Americana, a labor federation founded in Mexico City in 1938 to link trade unions across Latin America. The title's reference to a Día contra la Reacción, or day against reaction, points to a rally against conservative governments and anti-labor measures of the period. Marches like this were a common way for unions to press demands for wages, land and workers' rights in the decades around the Second World War, and the banners themselves often carried the slogans and affiliations that identified each organization.
