Banners reading "Día contra la reacción," or "Day against reaction," make the purpose of this 1929 Mexico City march plain before anyone looks at the crowd behind them. Mexico was still working through the aftermath of its revolution, and street demonstrations by labor unions, students and political groups were a common way to press claims and answer conservative or clerical opponents. Banners like these did double duty, announcing a message to onlookers while helping marchers hold their place in a long procession.
