Few slogans of the period were as direct as the one on this banner: *Pan y libertad*, or "bread and liberty," carried through the streets of Mexico City during the 1929 May Day march. May 1 had long been a day for organized workers to make their demands, and by the late 1920s unions and leftist groups used the parade to press for wages, land, and political rights in a country still shaped by the aftermath of the Revolution. Pairing food with freedom tied everyday hardship to questions of who held power. Banners like this one were carried by marchers themselves, so they reflect the voices of the crowd rather than official statements.
