The view looks across the Capitol grounds toward the Library of Congress, which was then newly housed in its own building on the east side of the Capitol, a structure that had opened to readers only a few years earlier. The record dates the print to November 20, 1894, a time when the Library's grand Italian Renaissance-style building was still a fresh addition to Washington's skyline. Photographs like this one were often made for public interest and for government records, so they capture how the young building sat among the landscaped Capitol grounds. Its quiet domes and stone facade still reward a close look.
