A gun crew at Sandy Hook, the narrow spit of New Jersey shore that guards the approach to New York Harbor, is shown aiming a 14-inch gun. Sandy Hook was a long-running Army artillery post, and heavy coastal guns of this size were built to strike armored warships at long range before they could reach the city. The Bain News Service, a New York wire photo agency, sent photographers to cover military subjects in the early twentieth century, so the glass negative offers a working view of coastal defense from that period. The record does not give a date for the exposure.
