The name on this glass negative, Cecil Arden, is the only detail in the record that identifies its subject, and the Bain News Service supplied it from caption cards and negative sleeves rather than from a verified source. Arden was a stage performer, and Bain's New York studio photographed many theater and concert figures of the early twentieth century, often for newspaper and magazine use. The Bain Collection at the Library of Congress holds a large body of these glass plates, which record how press portraits were made before roll film became common. Because the title is unconfirmed, the sitter's identity is best treated as a working attribution.
