Few photographs of the White House focus on the people who kept its day-to-day work running rather than the presidents they served, and that is what sets this cyanotype apart. Its deep blue tone comes from the cyanotype process, an inexpensive method that relied on sunlight and was widely used for copies and quick reproductions in the decades around 1900. The record dates the print to sometime between 1889 and 1906, a period when the executive office staff worked in cramped rooms inside the mansion itself, before the West Wing was built in 1902. Looking at the group, you see a working side of federal government that rarely made the newspapers.
