The Ten Commandments poster promotes Cecil B. DeMille's 1923 silent epic, a film that set a modern Biblical story against a tale of two brothers in the San Francisco of its own day. DeMille, already known for lavish spectacle, staged the Exodus and the parting of the Red Sea on a scale few studios attempted, and the film's success helped establish the Biblical epic as a Hollywood genre. The poster's bold color and dramatic imagery were meant to draw crowds in an era when movie advertising relied heavily on painted illustration and eye-catching display. Its undated printing and unknown printer make it a useful example of how studios marketed their films to the public.
