A single soldier's tombstone is the subject of this glass negative, which the Library titled for the grave marker rather than for any named person. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio active in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, produced large numbers of plates like this one. The July 27, 1922 date comes from information written on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified. Streaks and small blemishes on the glass are typical of natural deterioration in the original coating and do not come from the scene itself.
