Philippe Sudré Dartiguenave is the man named in this record, a Haitian politician who became president in 1915, the year United States Marines landed and the American occupation of Haiti began. Chosen by the Haitian legislature under heavy American pressure, he served largely as a figurehead while Washington directed much of the country's finances and security, a role that made him a divisive figure at home. The negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that distributed news photographs widely in the early twentieth century. The title is unverified, so the identification rests on the original caption card.
