A mermaid rises across this c1868 lithograph, an unusual figure for a tobacco label, and the caption promises cigars made from the finest Vuelta Abajo leaf. That region in western Cuba, centered on Pinar del Rio, has long been prized for its tobacco, so naming it was a common way for makers to signal quality. Labels like this were printed in quantity during the 1860s to decorate cigar boxes, and classical and mythological figures were popular for lending a product an air of elegance. The copyright line credits A. Kerbs, the party who secured rights to the design.
