Arthur Szyk, a Polish-born illustrator who settled in the United States, painted this 1949 drawing in New Canaan, Connecticut, where he worked during his final years. Its title refers to Franklin D. Roosevelt's 1941 "Four Freedoms" speech, which named freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear as universal rights. Szyk combined that political message with a religious scene, placing the Virgin Mary, the infant Jesus, and the Magi in a richly detailed, jewel-toned composition. The small sheet is a good example of his miniaturist technique, layering transparent watercolor, gouache, and ink over graphite.
