Its title describes a wide view of a tropical waterway, with dense forest pressing right down to both banks. The gallery files it under Theodore Roosevelt's presidency, from 1901 to 1909, a period when American interest in tropical lands and water routes ran high, most visibly in the effort to build a canal across Panama. Photographs of tropical waterways from that era often documented the terrain that engineers and planners would have to tame. Notice how little of the shoreline has been cleared, so the forest, rather than the water, fills most of the frame.
