The Empress of Scotland was a Canadian Pacific steamship that carried passengers across the Atlantic, and this glass negative likely records the liner in its working life in the early twentieth century, when Bain News Service photographers were busy documenting ships, dockside scenes and newsworthy arrivals in New York. The record gives no date or photographer, and its title comes from caption information that the Library of Congress itself describes as unverified, so the exact occasion remains uncertain. What survives is typical of the Bain collection: a sharp, large-format glass plate that captures the scale of ocean travel during an era when transatlantic liners were among the most visible symbols of modern mobility.
