Two men known more for words and ideas than for the camera stand together in this glass negative, a pairing the record names as the astronomer and popular science writer Garrett P. Serviss and the inventor Hudson Maxim. Serviss wrote widely on astronomy and was the author of *Edison's Conquest of Mars*, a sequel to H. G. Wells's *War of the Worlds*, while Maxim was known for his work on smokeless explosives. The Bain News Service, which supplied news photographs to New York newspapers in the early twentieth century, made this negative, but the record gives no date or occasion, and its title is unverified.
