Helen Wills, the tennis champion, is the subject of this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of work built by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers from the early 1900s into the 1920s. Wills rose to fame in the 1920s, winning the women's singles title at Wimbledon and the U.S. National Championships several times, and she became one of the most photographed athletes of her day. The Bain negatives were made on glass plates, so their sharpness and tonal detail reflect the technology of the period. The caption information for this plate comes from unverified notes, so its exact date and setting are uncertain.
