Few pictures from the Bain News Service show the picket line as directly as this glass negative, which records women strikers from New York's ladies' tailoring trade. The date noted with the image, February 5, 1910, places the scene in a winter when garment workers across the city walked off the job in large numbers. Many of those walkouts were led by young immigrant women who worked long hours for low pay and pressed for shorter days, safer shops and union recognition. The title comes from Bain caption data that has not been independently verified, so the exact trade and date are best read as the photographer's own notes.
