Wilson, the 28th president, is named as the subject of this glass negative, though the record gives no date and the title comes from caption cards the Bain News Service supplied, so it has not been independently verified. Bain's agency, founded in New York in the early 1900s, sold news pictures of politicians, performers, and public events to newspapers, and Wilson, who led the country from 1913 to 1921, was a frequent subject. Glass negatives like this one were the working medium of press photography before film became standard, so the plate itself records the photographic practice of the period as much as the sitter.
