Few of the firm's landscapes pair farm work with night light as directly as this one, a moonlit harvest scene from the 1860s. Currier & Ives, the New York lithography firm, produced hand-colored views like this in large numbers, selling them inexpensively to a public that enjoyed images of rural life. The harvest moon is the full moon nearest the autumn equinox, and its unusually low, bright rise let farmers keep working into the evening, which tied the subject to the season's labor and abundance.
