The first automobile to make the round trip between Dawson and Whitehorse is the subject here, recorded by J. Doody of Dawson in December 1912. Before motor vehicles, travel across the Yukon relied on horses, sleds and river steamers, and most overland routes were little more than wagon tracks. Making the journey in winter tested both the machine and its crew against the cold and rough ground. The photograph is held in the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection at the Library of Congress.
