Sunk across the James River in Virginia, these schooners were placed to block Union warships from steaming upriver toward Richmond. The scene shows how both sides used hulks as barriers during the final campaign of the war in 1865. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, died in 1866. The picture was made as a stereograph, a pair of images meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect, a format that brought wartime scenes into parlors.
