Few fishing grounds in the North Atlantic were as productive as Georges Bank, a broad shoal far out at sea off New England. Trawlers working its waters dragged weighted nets along the seafloor for cod, haddock and flounder, and ports such as Gloucester and New Bedford built large fleets around that catch. Crews often stayed at sea for weeks in cold, rough conditions, and this picture shows one fisherman in the middle of that demanding work on deck.
