Baskets of fish are being hauled off a boat and onto a market dock, with the workers' bent backs and heavy loads making the labor the clear center of the scene. Waterfront markets like this one were the working core of coastal and river towns, where catches came in by the basket and were sold, weighed and shipped out within hours. Scenes of dockside unloading were common subjects for photographers and painters who wanted to record how food actually reached a town's tables. Look closely at the dock planks and the stacked containers, which show how much of the trade depended on muscle, timing and the tide.
