Horse teams and loaded carts dominate this 1918 poster by J.C. Leyendecker, who drew on a familiar sight of the day to make a wartime appeal. Issued by the United States Fuel Administration, it urged people to order coal early so supplies could move steadily through a season of heavy wartime demand. Leyendecker, best known for his magazine covers and clothing advertisements, brought the same polished commercial style to this government campaign, and the wagons show how much fuel still moved by horse-drawn transport in the late 1910s.
