This glass negative shows Robert Goelet, a member of the New York Goelet family, whose fortune rested largely on Manhattan real estate held across several generations. The Bain News Service, which made and distributed news pictures from New York in the early twentieth century, produced the negative for the press, so the portrait reflects how wealthy New Yorkers were presented to newspaper readers of the day. The record's title comes from caption data supplied by the agency and has not been independently verified, and the date is unknown. Glass plates like this one are worth noticing for their fine detail, which was typical of the medium before film replaced it.
