The title names a married couple, Mr. and Mrs. Borden Harriman, and the record gives no date, so the photograph's exact setting is unknown. Borden Harriman was a New York man of business whose wife, Florence Jaffray "Daisy" Harriman, later became a prominent society figure and, under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the first woman to serve as United States minister to Norway. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York news photography agency that supplied images to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Because the Bain captions were often recorded from memory or secondhand, the names here should be read as the agency's own identification.
