The record gives the name Mrs. Sarah Mulkey Todd for this small glass negative, but the Bain News Service's own caption cards describe that title as unverified, so the identification should be treated with some caution. George Grantham Bain started his news photography service in New York in 1899, and its staff sent pictures of politics, sports, theater and everyday life to newspapers across the country. Negatives like this one, made on glass in sizes of 5 by 7 inches or smaller, now show how working press photographers recorded people in the early twentieth century.
