The name Adelaide Culp comes from caption information the Bain News Service attached to this glass negative, and the Library of Congress notes that the title has not been verified. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the body of work built by a New York news photo agency that George Grantham Bain founded around 1899 to supply newspapers with pictures of current events and notable people. Its glass plates, mostly 5 by 7 inches or smaller, were made for quick reproduction in the press, which is why the collection holds so many portraits and everyday scenes from the early twentieth century.
