A state carriage built for the Vice-roy of Egypt is an unusual subject for a railroad print, since most such images show ordinary American passenger cars. The car was built by T.W. Wason & Co. of Springfield, Massachusetts, a firm known for railway passenger coaches, and the design and color lithograph were produced by Bingham, Dodd & Co. of Hartford, Connecticut. Egypt's rulers were then expanding its rail network, which had begun with the Alexandria to Cairo line in the 1850s, so an elaborate car for the viceroy shows how American builders reached overseas customers.
