Plans from the Carnegie Leaflet document one of the largest building programs in American library history. Between 1886 and the early 1920s, Andrew Carnegie funded more than 1,600 public library buildings across the United States, and he required towns to supply the site and commit to ongoing operating support. Carnegie's staff and architects circulated standard designs so communities could adapt a proven layout instead of commissioning a new building. Features such as generous natural light, open reading rooms and a clear separation between book stacks and public space shaped how libraries were used for decades.
