The Carnegie Library in Atlanta, Georgia, was one of the many public libraries funded by steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, who gave money across the United States and abroad to build reading rooms for ordinary citizens. Atlanta's branch, which opened in 1902 on Forsyth Street and was later associated with the Atlanta Public Library system, stood out for its classical design and its place in the city's growing downtown. Images like this one document how these buildings shaped civic life in the early twentieth century, when a free library card was a rare and welcome privilege for many residents.
