The Great Seal of the United States is the national emblem used to authenticate official documents, and this color lithograph renders its familiar imagery in bright, deliberate detail: the bald eagle holding an olive branch and a bundle of thirteen arrows, the shield of thirteen stripes, and the reverse side's unfinished pyramid topped by the Eye of Providence. Andrew B. Graham, a New York printmaker known for his commercial and decorative lithographs, produced this version during the decades when chromolithography was popular for patriotic wall pieces and schoolroom displays. Prints like this brought the seal's symbols into homes and classrooms during a period of rapid national growth. Notice how the eagle's position and the seal's heraldic colors were adapted for a printed audience.
