Albany, New York, was a busy river port on the Hudson in 1805, and Market Street was where its trade met the street. Farmers from the valley brought grain, livestock and produce into town, and merchants and townspeople bought and sold them there. The city had been settled by the Dutch in the 1620s and kept much of its early layout, so a scene like this shows a colonial trading town adjusting to the commerce of the young republic. It is worth noticing how closely the market depended on the river and the farms beyond the town.
