Its title names Harry Houdini, the escape artist whose handcuff and underwater stunts drew large crowds in the early 1900s, though that identification comes from caption cards and has not been verified. The glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers. Houdini's staged escapes depended heavily on publicity, so press photographs like this one helped build his reputation. The undated record leaves the occasion unclear.
