Children and a sprig of holly frame the words "Merry Christmas to You" on this greeting card, a format that grew popular in the mid-nineteenth century. The first commercial Christmas card is generally traced to England in 1843, and by the later Victorian decades color printing had made cards cheap enough for ordinary families to send to friends and relatives. Scenes of children were especially common, since they suggested innocence, family and holiday cheer. The card is a useful example of how the greeting card became part of the Christmas custom.
