The title pairs a person named Valentine with a horse, though the Bain News Service caption cards that supplied it are unverified, so the identity of the man and the animal is uncertain. The picture is one of the glass negatives in the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Bain's New York agency supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its files include many portraits and scenes of street life, when horses still drew much of the city's traffic. The record gives no date, so the negative's exact age is unknown, but its format and agency point to the period before the 1920s.
